Early Career
Before any of the franchise deals or international caps, Brevis was just another talented kid working his way through school and age-group cricket in South Africa. Good enough to get picked for the national Under-19 side, though, and that’s where things picked up speed.
The 2022 Under-19 World Cup turned into his breakout moment. Two centuries, three fifties, 506 runs across six matches. He broke the previous scoring record for the tournament and left the West Indies with his name on everyone’s shortlist.
Professional Career
He was signed by Northerns ahead of the 2021-22 domestic season. This is where his journey of being on the rise within South African domestic cricket started. He developed an image of being a power hitter pretty quickly especially since he scored 162 runs in just 57 deliveries against the Knights in October 2022.
He kept progressing. Third highest run-getter in the 2023-24 one day cup. Also got a championship in the SA20 with MI Cape Town shortly after that. Was the second highest run-getter in that season’s first class cricket as well with 573 runs at an average of 47.75.
International Career
The first taste of international Twenty20 cricket came for him in the month of August 2023 when he played his first match against Australia. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to perform well in that series as he scored only five runs in two matches which resulted in him being demoted to domestic cricket.
But, this move turned out to be very beneficial for him because he made a comeback in the international team in 2025 where he scored 180 runs in one series of three matches which included an innings of 100 plus and one fifty plus innings.

June 2025, Bulawayo, against Zimbabwe. It was then that South Africa presented the Test cap to Brevis, making for the much anticipated Test debut of Dewald Brevis.
Brevis took the opportunity seriously. Batting at the middle order in the Test match, he made his debut fifty runs in hand, an encouraging beginning in a format that requires patience rather than strength much more frequently. His other good Test innings so far happened in October 2025 in Pakistan on a turning wicket despite South Africa’s defeat in that game.
Four Tests in, his numbers read 138 runs at an average of 23.00, two fifties, and a top score of 54. He’s chipped in with the ball too, taking one wicket at an average of 22.00. Small sample size still. These figures will look different a year or two from now, once he’s had more time in red-ball cricket.
Dewald Brevis ODI Stats
Brevis made his ODI bow in August 2025 against Australia, and he opened his account about as loudly as possible, a six off the very first ball he faced. Not a bad way to start a format.
South Africa uses him in the middle order here too, the kind of role built for accelerating once he’s had a look at the bowling. His first ODI fifty came in December 2025, against India, 54 runs off just 34 balls, five sixes in the mix.
After playing nine innings in ODIs, he has scored 230 runs at an average of 28.75, one fifty, best score being 54 runs. The Dewald Brevis T20I stats story really has two chapters. Chapter one starts in August 2023, against Australia, and it’s a short, rough one. Five runs in two games, followed by a spot back in the domestic setup.
The real fun begins in chapter two. When he came back in 2025, he was more developed as a player, more relaxed at the crease but just as menacing. 125 not out is also his only century in T20Is, which comes to a total of 923 runs from 35 games at 30.76 average, including the century and the fifty.

Dewald Brevis IPL Career
Brevis’s debut season in the IPL happened in 2022 where he debuted for Mumbai Indians at the price of INR 3 crore as a result of his performances in the U-19 World Cup. The huge amount of money paid to such young player definitely raised eyebrows.
